The VQA Wine Shop at Mattick’s Farm Celebrates 15 year anniversary!
“Who could have imagined the BC Wine Industry would experience such phenomenal growth in such a relatively short amount of time!” remarks Wine Shop owner Beth Crawford.

Twenty-five years ago while working for the BC Liquor Stores she took an interest in BC’s fledgling wine industry.

“Life is all about timing - I heard about the VQA store licences while on a British Columbia Wine Institute sponsored media tour in 1997”.  Enchanted by the industry from the start - she began investigating the VQA store licences.  There were only 3 stores in existence at the time.  With the guidance of the “Godfather” of the BC Wine Industry Harry McWatters she secured the fourth licence issued in the province.  The location presented itself also through serendipity.  In 1998 Mattick’s Farm was undergoing expansion.  When Beth made a visit to the site where the shop now stands, she states, “ I fell in love with the place! Cordova Bay is a wonderful community in the equally delightful city of Victoria. I have met many wonderful people through the years and have felt quite blessed that I seized the opportunity and opened my store at this location”.
The number of wineries when Beth began her venture in 1998 was around 40 – at last count there are in excess of 200!  “It is wonderful to have such a connection to the industry and its history, I have something akin to reverence for how it has evolved. I represent an amazing dynamic industry, and I am very proud of that fact!”  This store has arguably the best selection of BC wines in town AND all at winery direct prices.  “When people shop at this store they know that they are getting premium wines at the best price.  We carry many of the limited release wines and smaller boutique wines that just aren’t that easy to find.”
Beth has built her business on excellent customer service – and has always hired people who are passionate about the BC Wine Industry.  The space is small and welcoming.  Many people feel intimidated buying wine but at this shop the staff’s expertise makes it simple and fun. “People have come to expect that we will take the guess work out of wine choices for them”  It is all summed up in the store slogan that is meant to sound like a wine descriptor:
“Knowledgeable – yet not pretentious…. Approachable with a hint of sass!”

Fifteen years later she looks back with a certain amount of pride, and a whole lot of thankfulness for those who have helped along the way.
“I look forward to the next 15 years and I raise my glass to the dedicated staff I have now and have had in the past, and of course to all the wonderful people who love BC wine and patronize the VQA Wine Shop at Mattick’s Farm!!!”
